February News

I recently completed a vibration analysis on a radar tower that supports a 5,000 lb radar unit.  The radar tower was required to have a minimum natural frequency of 1 Hz.  A detailed model was prepared with femap and analyzed with stardyne where the lowest natural frequency was found to be much higher than the minimum.

The modal analysis was performed before the final design / draft stage in order to verify that the design would meet the design specifications.

Performing the analysis work before the final design is completed has the advantage that if the design was found to need stiffening that the detailed design / draft work would not have to be re-done.

This can save the manufacturer a considerable amount of time and money.

The determination of the vibration characteristics of a  structure are very important and are used to avoid harmful resonant response which can occur if a periodic forcing function exists at or near one of the systems natural frequencies.

If this were to occur the displacements caused by the forcing function can amplify and grow to a level where the structure can fail due to to fatigue fracture, excessive yield, or excessive displacement which could result in a non-linear buckling failure which could cause the structure to collapse.

I can also determine the response of structure or part due to random vibration input, time based loads, frequency based loads, shock loads, impact loading, drop testing, and crash analysis.  These analysis may include nonlinear effects as well as linear modal response by using explicit methods such as found in Dyna3D.
